What is a Grade Calculator?
A grade calculator computes your weighted course grade based on multiple assignments, tests, and projects — each with a different weight. It answers the critical question: “What is my current grade?”
How to Use the Grade Calculator
- Enter each assignment or category name (optional)
- Enter your grade percentage for each item
- Enter the weight of each item (all weights should total 100%)
- Click Calculate
Weighted Grade Formula
- Weighted Grade = Σ(Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight)
Example Calculation
| Item | Grade | Weight | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midterm | 82% | 30% | 24.6 |
| Final Exam | 74% | 40% | 29.6 |
| Homework | 95% | 20% | 19.0 |
| Participation | 100% | 10% | 10.0 |
| Total | — | 100% | 83.2% |
GPA Letter Grade Scale (USA)
| Percentage | Letter Grade | GPA Points |
|---|---|---|
| 93–100% | A | 4.0 |
| 90–92% | A− | 3.7 |
| 87–89% | B+ | 3.3 |
| 83–86% | B | 3.0 |
| 80–82% | B− | 2.7 |
| 77–79% | C+ | 2.3 |
| 73–76% | C | 2.0 |
| 70–72% | C− | 1.7 |
| Below 60% | F | 0.0 |
What Grade Do I Need on My Final?
To find the grade needed on your final exam to achieve a target course grade:
- Required Final = (Target Grade − Current Grade × Current Weight%) ÷ Final Exam Weight%
Example: You need a 90% final grade. You have 82% on 60% of your grade. Final is worth 40%:
- Required = (90 − 82 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (90 − 49.2) ÷ 0.40 = 102% — not possible, so target 85% instead
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is a weighted grade?
A weighted grade accounts for the fact that different assignments contribute different percentages to your final course grade. For example, a final exam worth 40% of your grade matters more than a homework assignment worth 10%. The calculator multiplies each grade by its weight and divides by the total weight to produce an accurate weighted average.
Can I calculate my GPA with this tool?
This calculator computes your weighted course grade for a single class. To calculate your overall GPA, you would need to average the grade points from all your courses weighted by credit hours. However, you can use the letter grade scale provided above to convert your percentage grade to GPA points for individual courses.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
No problem! Our grade calculator automatically normalizes the weights — it divides the weighted sum by the total weight entered, so your weights do not need to add up to exactly 100%. For example, weights of 30, 40, and 20 (totaling 90) will still produce an accurate weighted average result.
How accurate is this grade calculator?
The calculator uses the standard weighted average formula and provides results with two decimal places of precision. The accuracy depends entirely on the grades and weights you enter. Always double-check your syllabus for the official grading breakdown, as some instructors may use slightly different weighting schemes.
Does this work for all grading systems?
Yes! While the letter grade scale shown is based on the standard US grading system, the weighted percentage calculation works universally. Simply enter your percentages and weights regardless of your school or country specific grading scale. You can ignore the letter grade output if your institution uses a different scale.
