VAT Calculator

Add or remove VAT from a price instantly. Works with any VAT rate and both net and gross amounts.

What is VAT?

Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax added to the price of goods and services at each stage of the supply chain where value is added. It is ultimately borne by the final consumer. Businesses collect VAT on their sales and can reclaim the VAT they paid on their purchases, so the tax ends up being paid on the value added at each stage.

VAT rates vary by country and product category. Common standard rates include 20% (UK), 19% (Germany), 20% (France), and 10% (Australia). Some essentials, like food or children’s clothing, may be taxed at a reduced or zero rate.

How to Use the VAT Calculator

The calculator is flexible and supports both directions:

  1. Enter the amount you are working with.
  2. Enter the VAT rate as a percentage.
  3. Choose whether to Add VAT (net to gross) or Remove VAT (gross to net).

Press Calculate to see the net amount, the VAT amount, and the gross amount.

The VAT Formulas

To add VAT (convert a net price to a gross price):

Gross = Net × (1 + VAT ÷ 100)
VAT Amount = Net × (VAT ÷ 100)

To remove VAT (convert a gross price to a net price):

Net = Gross ÷ (1 + VAT ÷ 100)
VAT Amount = Gross − Net

Example Calculation

A product has a net price of $100, and the VAT rate is 20%.

Item Value
Net Price $100
VAT Rate 20%
VAT Amount = 100 × 0.20 $20
Gross Price = 100 + 20 $120

The customer pays $120, of which $20 is VAT. If you instead started with a gross price of $120, the net price would be $120 ÷ 1.20 = $100.

Why VAT Matters

For businesses, correct VAT handling is essential for compliance, accurate pricing, and reclaiming input tax. For consumers, understanding VAT helps you know what portion of the price you pay is tax. For anyone budgeting or invoicing, the ability to switch between net and gross prices quickly is a practical everyday skill.

How the Calculator Works

Depending on the operation you select, the calculator either adds VAT to a net amount (multiplying by 1 plus the rate) or removes VAT from a gross amount (dividing by 1 plus the rate). In both cases it reports the net price, the VAT component, and the gross price, formatted to two decimal places.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between net and gross price?

The net price is the amount before VAT is added. The gross price is the total including VAT, which is what the customer actually pays.

How do I calculate the VAT amount from a gross price?

Divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate as a decimal) to find the net price, then subtract it from the gross price. The difference is the VAT amount.

Are VAT and sales tax the same?

They are similar but not identical. Sales tax is typically charged only at the final retail sale, while VAT is applied at every stage of the supply chain with credit for tax already paid.

Does the calculator handle reduced rates?

Yes. You can enter any VAT rate, including reduced or zero rates, by typing the applicable percentage.
